Wendy Abu Dhabi was a re-interpretation of the Wendy sculpture created for MoMA PS1 as part of the Young Architects’ Program Competition and was installed for one month on the Abu Dhabi Corniche beach for Sustainability Week. Wendy Abu Dhabi used a different scaffolding system and it was rethought for its new context but the essence of the structural principle remained. A structural grid made of typical construction scaffolding creates the frame for a 3 dimensional star shaped fabric surface. This approach eliminates the need for the typical cross-bracing used in construction scaffolding, as the star-shaped frame forms the bracing for the whole structure. The fabric is treated with a titanium dioxide nanofilm to neutralize air pollutants. Wendy was dismantled in February 2013 and is now waiting for the next installation.
