Innovative Mobility Hub in circular hybrid timber construction

Project

A forward-thinking mobility hub is taking shape on the site of the former Breuninger parking garage. Designed for flexible and future-oriented use, this project goes far beyond a conventional parking facility. The hub integrates multiple modes of transportation and offers approximately 480 car parking spaces, 150 bicycle parking spaces, car-sharing services, charging infrastructure, and a range of innovative mobility solutions. Sustainability and circular construction are at the heart of this development. Existing materials from the original structure are being reused, while the new building is constructed using circular timber construction methods. In addition, the project features extensive green outdoor spaces, photovoltaic canopies for renewable energy generation, and retention roofs for environmentally friendly water management.

PRE-USE APPROACH

From the very beginning of the design process, this project aimed to incorporate the reuse of materials from the former parking structure. To enable this, the potential for reuse was carefully evaluated early in the planning phase and prior to demolition. While the monolithic reinforced concrete frame was scheduled for complete demolition, the steel structure of the stair and elevator tower – added to the west side of the original building in 1999 – showed significant potential for reuse. Several suitable steel sections were selectively dismantled, cut to size, and tested for quality. Through an iterative planning process, these reclaimed elements were successfully integrated into the new roof structure. Additional steel components from the former elevator tower will also be reused in the “Regenbogenwald” Children and Youth Center currently under construction in Darmstadt, which is likewise being planned by knippershelbig.
