Extended vocational school building with self-supporting steel skeleton construction
Project
The Wilhelm-Maybach school building in Stuttgart Bad Cannstatt was extended upwards by one floor which is visually distinct from the existing building. Extensive investigation of the existing structure revealed that the existing building, which dates from the 1950s, would not be able to support additional loads unless it was very substantially and expensively reinforced. For this reason, and in order not to impose any loads on the existing building, the structure of the extension is supported by an independent construction combining steel with reinforced concrete. A large part of the facade of the new structure is glazed, thus providing an impressive view of the Neckar valley and Bad Cannstatt.
