The Crisscross Signal Spire is an interactive work of light art designed by Höweler + Yoon Architecture that acts as a sculptural beacon at Dudley Square, Boston. The spire visualizes social media content with its integrated LED lighting system in real-time. The stainless steel tubes are only 4 inches in diameter and form a self-buttressing, 38 feet high structure. The braided array of tubes is optimized such that they create sufficient global stiffness in consideration of complex wind dynamics. Even the density of perforation along the tubes is informed by structural needs.
