An 11-story office building with scaled element facade on the waterfront of a new district in Washington, D.C.

Project

In Washington D.C.'s new Waterfront District, an impressive two-part building with mixed-use functions, including office and retail spaces, is being constructed. The eleven-story structure stands out with its innovative architecture, featuring a scaled element facade as a striking design feature. This facade not only gives the building a unique appearance but also blends seamlessly into the modern cityscape of the emerging waterfront district, highlighting its urban character.

The facade features a scaled element design with a project-specific profile system and curved building corners

Facade Design
The main facade consists of an aluminum element facade with a project-specific profile system. The overlapping of the facade creates a geometric offset in the area of the stack joint, which was achieved with a continuous thermal layer. Conical glass panels and J-shaped glass panels, as well as curved facade profiles, are used at the curved building corners.

Thermal and Structural Analysis
Thermal simulations were conducted to develop details for the scaled element facade. In variant studies, the extent to which the space behind the glazing needs to be insulated to meet U-value requirements and avoid condensation was investigated. Additionally, various components were statically analyzed; in some cases, final, verifiable calculations for the facade were produced.
