Skate Park at the Pragfriedhof cemetery in the north of Stuttgart with 3-dimensional concrete landscape

Project

The skate park in Stuttgart consists of three building sections: Shotcrete bowl, in-situ concrete plaza and a previously unrealized two-storey reinforced concrete structure that covers the halfpipe and a youth club with a GRP construction. The concrete facility was designed completely from a single cast, the in-situ concrete method guarantees a seamless, smooth surface for smooth skating. The bowl is based on the monolithic construction method commonly used for pools in California. Compared to the widely used prefabricated facilities, this allowed for a more sophisticated and attractive use for skaters.

Special Structures
The concreting sections were carried out in 3 steps. First, the horizontal parts were concreted as a floor with in-situ concrete. Then the edges of the higher forms were defined and finally the multi-curved surfaces were formed with the help of wooden templates. To avoid cracks and settling, the concrete was poured without movement joints, thus achieving absolute continuity. The free shaping with curves and round corners was modeled in the substructure using 30 percent slope gradients, which were fixed with single grain concrete after completion. The reinforcement made of 10 mm structural steel was then woven by hand and placed in two layers at close intervals.
