The new Sid Richardson Residential College replaced an old existing tower, accommodating an expanding student body at Rice University. The building is recognizable by three prominent shifting volumes: a 12-story tower, a 5-story building and an open terrace structure. The structure features reinforced concrete framing with prestressed concrete slabs. Exposed, sloping steel beams carrying photovoltaic elements cover the open terrace. The minimal use of column supports in the dining hall allows for flexible use of various student gatherings and events. Directing the loads of the tower to the minimal supports required massive concrete beam elements which were exposed, forming a monumental presence in the high ceilings
