The “Pressecafé”, a two-story pavilion with a cantilevering upper floor projecting towards Karl-Marx-Allee, is a prominent part of the “Pressehaus am Alexanderplatz (formerly “Haus des Berliner Verlages”) complex, listed as cultural heritage. After removal of the fitout and decontamination, a fundamental renovation and restoration of the 1973 appearance took place, preserving and reconstructing as much as possible of its original materiality and detail. The scope includes a new café on ground floor, 1st floor connections with the New Podium and high rise buildings and new MEP equipment. The upper floor is prepared as a restaurant / multifunctional area for approx. 340 persons. The areas on ground floor are provided with new, highly transparent and partially mobile glazing. The existing 1st floor façades are newly rebuilt, while above 1st floor the enamel frieze by artist Willi Neubert of approx. 3.5 m in height and 80 m in length is carefully restored.
