Spherical segment courtyard roofing of the Max Planck Institute in Martinsried near Munich

Project

With around 20 scientific departments and research groups and around 750 employees, the Max Planck Institute (MPIB) for Biochemistry and Neurobiology is one of the largest institutes in the Max Planck Society. The institute is integrating a cafeteria for employees and guests into the existing concrete building from the 1970s near the main entrance. Space is provided by an atrium, which is covered by a glazed bar grid dome developed from a spherical segment and can be moved completely to the side in good weather. The roof also serves as a smoke opening in the event of a fire.
