Two cantilevered canopies in glass and steel construction on Y-supports

Project

The Lincoln Center for the Perfoming Arts is the most significant cultural centre in New York. The cultural complex groups three street blocks into a central plaza. The architectural firm Diller Scofidio+Renfro transformed the entire complex. They have designed two widely projecting glass awnings. Two steel columns, are piercing through a pedestrian ramp and establish the only support point for the 89 ft long structure. The elevation shows the two columns as a abstract Y. Thanks to the understated appearance of the glass and the delicate steel construction, both canopies blend discreetly into the public space.
