Future-oriented campus in timber hybrid construction with adaptive shading elements

Project

LIFE HAMBURG is a future-oriented campus dedicated to lifelong learning and collaborative working. Initiated by Benjamin and Janina Lin Otto, the project is being developed under the auspices of their Holistic Foundation in the Bramfeld district of Hamburg, on the grounds of the Otto Group. LIFE HAMBURG brings together flexible spaces for education, recreation, and work within a sustainable structure built in timber-hybrid construction. The distinctive façade, featuring fixed shading and light-directing elements, is precisely aligned with the sun’s path and adapts to seasonal changes – making the concept of sustainability a tangible experience for users and visitors alike.

Solid construction made of timber and steel with a post-and-beam façade

structural engineering, facade design
The building's supporting structure will be based on a timber frame construction reinforced by ceiling slabs and wall assemblies. The complex geometry of the folded roof structure above the agora and the integration of star-shaped steel connection nodes at the ceiling junctions require engineering expertise of the highest standard. All components, such as fire wall replacement walls (EI60) and escape balconies, will be manufactured to be highly fire-retardant. Energy will be supplied via solar panels and geothermal energy.
