Folded noise protection wall made of cob (Wellerlehm) for the urban space of Düsseldorf

Project

The design of the folded noise protection wall originated from an interdisciplinary competition that aimed to integrate noise protection into Düsseldorf’s urban space as part of the Rhein-Ruhr Express infrastructure expansion. The winning concept introduces innovative noise barriers made of “Wellerlehm”, a material composed of excavated soil, straw, and reed. This construction method combines the proven advantages of traditional “Wellerlehm” techniques—such as durability, stability against vibrations, and effective noise insulation—with modern manufacturing technology. Additionally, “Wellerlehm” contributes to environmental sustainability by sequestering carbon and being fully recyclable.

Structural Design
The design of the folded, self-supporting noise protection wall combines traditional construction techniques with modern modular construction. Straw and reed serve as natural reinforcement. The highly compacted “Wellerlehm” modules enable a stable and efficient structure with beneficial static, acoustic, ecological, and aesthetic properties. The folded structure enhances resistance to wind and pressure forces. Depending on the soil conditions, the foundation is planned as either a strip foundation or a pile foundation. A reinforced concrete base is designed to transfer wind and dead loads into the ground via axial forces and bending moments.
