Innovative, durable timber bridge typology with a distinctive design language
Project
On the occasion of the Remstal Garden Show 2019, the municipalities of Weinstadt and Urbach commissioned three new pedestrian and cycle bridges based on the Stuttgart Timber Bridge concept. The so-called Stuttgart Timber Bridge represents an innovative and durable bridge typology designed to require minimal maintenance over its service life. This bridge type was developed as part of a research project launched in 2013 in cooperation with research institutions and industry partners. In contrast to historic timber bridges, the new development is conceived as an integral structure, i.e. a bridge without bearings or expansion joints: the superstructure and abutments are monolithically connected.
