Haus des Verlages
The “Haus des Berliner Verlages“ (Berlin Publisher’s House), now “Pressehaus am Alexanderplatz”, was inaugurated 1973 as editorial headquarter for East German newspapers and magazines. As a 17-story high-rise with a footprint of approx. 100 x 15 m, it is part of the ensemble of central representative buildings in the capital of German Democratic Republic (GDR) and marks the western end of Karl-Marx-Allee. In 1995 the curtain wall façade was poorly repaired and major architectural parts were removed, leaving the original appearance hardly recognizable. In 2015 the building was listed for preservation as a historic monument. From 2016-2020, the building was refurbished in a “rough but sexy” way. The existing aluminum façade was repaired, the roof structure was replaced by a spacious terrace and the exterior louver structure was reconstructed in its original form. On ground and 1st floor new metal/glass façades were added with a representative entrance, retail and gastronomic facilities.
