Sweden's tallest mass timber office building with a central access core in cross-laminate timber

Project

With a height of 51 meters, Fyrtornet is not only Malmö's first office building constructed in solid wood but also the tallest of its kind in Sweden. Located in the southern part of the city, it is part of the "Embassy of Sharing" district development. The 11-story building, a milestone in sustainable construction, is entirely made of wood above ground. The bracing core, which includes stairwells and lift shafts, is also constructed from solid wood. In addition to modern office spaces, the building houses a city library and various meeting rooms.

Utilizing the latest technical literature and analytical methods, wind-induced vibrations at the top of the tower were efficiently assessed for various structural designs.

Wind-induced Accelerations
Due to their lower mass, timber buildings are more susceptible to wind-induced vibrations. As a result, binderholz commissioned knippershelbig to investigate the dynamic behavior of the high-rise. The objective was to develop suitable structural measures to ensure compliance with the permissible acceleration values in the upper floors. Utilizing the latest technical literature and analytical methods, knippershelbig efficiently assessed the wind-induced vibrations at the top of the tower for various structural designs and communicated the findings to binderholz. A final wind tunnel test successfully confirmed the calculated vibrations.
